Battery Flashlight Rechargeable

Batteries are used in many electronic devices today such as cell phones, radios, laptop computers, toys, flashlights, and other portable devices. There are two types of batteries: primary or non-rechargeable and secondary or rechargeable. Alkaline batteries are secondary because there are some rechargeable types offered and are available in AAs, AAAs, Cs, Ds, and 9-volts. These batteries contain a small amount of zinc, mercury, and potassium hydroxide. Since Alkaline batteries are used in so many electronic devices, it is important to know what to do with the old batteries and how to properly dispose of them.

Discarding Alkaline Batteries

Contact the sanitation department of your local community or city. There may be drop off sites for battery recycling or waste drop off sites. Note the locations and dates of these sites. Many states require some form of battery recycling or battery disposal from some battery types. It is important to check your local municipality on the guidelines since rules can vary by each state.

Throwing away small quantities less than 10 alkaline batteries in the trash at one time is all right. Small amounts of these batteries are not harmful as long as they are not damaged or broken open.
